Apple revealed in a regulatory filing that it has reached an settlement to carry on group members and know-how from customized audio startup Huxe, in what’s generally often called a reverse acqui-hire deal.

As first reported in MacRumors, Apple disclosed to the European Fee that it has agreed to make employment gives to “sure workers of Huxe AI,” and to “obtain a non-exclusive license to Huxe’s mental property rights.”

Reverse acqui-hires emerged lately as a means for bigger firms to hire key team members and license technology from startups with out buying the startups outright — presumably permitting them to construct up AI expertise and tech with out drawing as a lot antitrust scrutiny. (Confusingly, these offers have each been referred to as “reverse acqui-hires” and as plain old “acqui-hires.”)

Within the case of Huxe, the startup was based by builders who’d beforehand labored on the AI-generated podcast features in NotebookLM (lately renamed Gemini Notebook). However Huxe introduced on Might 21 that it was shutting down, with the group posting on the Huxe website that the corporate could be eradicating its app from the Apple and Google shops, halting service, and deleting consumer knowledge.

“The group is transferring on to new issues, and we gained’t be persevering with improvement of the product,” the corporate mentioned. It additionally thanked its customers, saying, “The truth that you used it, instructed buddies about it, despatched us your options and your concepts, made it really feel like we constructed it collectively.”

On June 9, shortly after Huxe’s announcement, Apple notified the European Fee of its deal.

The submitting doesn’t say who acquired employment gives or in the event that they accepted. Nor does it disclose something about Apple’s plans.

Presumably associated: Huxe’s shutdown announcement got here only a day after Spotify unveiled AI-powered podcast generation features of its own, so Apple might be hoping so as to add comparable performance to its Podcasts app. Tech executives appear enamored with the concept that personalized audio can replace regular podcasts (and possibly even parent-child interaction?), although it’s not clear what number of regular listeners agree.
