On October 1, we launched our prototype satellite for Mission Suncatcher. The launch marked step one in our long-term analysis moonshot to discover powering AI compute in area. Since then, we have spent the previous few weeks finishing our commissioning guidelines, which included powering up the host and TPU trays and efficiently working early machine studying exams. This week, we reached our “Hi there World” milestone: the first-ever AI response from an information middle class TPU in orbit.
Throughout a ground-station move, we uplinked our first immediate to our onboard Gemma 4 open mannequin, asking it to generate a haiku about being in area. Because the satellite tv for pc handed by Svalbard, Norway, the downlinked poem confirmed success:
Blue marble under
Knowledge streams in silent grace
Starlight feeds my core. ✨
Following this preliminary output, we examined space-themed limericks and telemetry prompts reporting the technical standing of the payload methods. Subsequent, we are going to proceed with a sequence of exams to judge how TPUs carry out below thermal stress and radiation publicity in orbit. Verifying our TPUs can reliably execute workloads in area paves the best way for our subsequent milestone of dual interconnected satellites in 2027.
Our chips have formally earned their area wings — an necessary achievement on the lengthy street forward for this cosmic moonshot.
