Snap gets closer to releasing new AI glasses after years-long hiatus

Snap has introduced a brand new partnership between its AR-glasses targeted subsidiary, Specs, and chipmaker Qualcomm, as the corporate revs up for the discharge of its wearable later this 12 months.

The Snapchat creator has been teasing the discharge of the glasses—dubbed Spectacles, or merely Specs—for a very long time and, earlier this 12 months, it spun off a new company to particularly give attention to the enterprise enterprise. In February, the corporate abruptly parted ways with Scott Myers, its SVP of Specs, over a reported “blow-up” between himself and Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.

The newly introduced partnership with Qualcomm reveals indicators of life for the challenge. Specs shall be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR platforms, that are its systems-on-a-chip designed to energy augmented and digital actuality units, a press launch states.

The 2 corporations will develop “on-device AI, cutting-edge graphics, and superior multiuser digital experiences” as a part of a multi-year strategic settlement, a press launch claims.

“Our work with Qualcomm supplies a robust basis for the way forward for Specs, bringing builders and shoppers superior expertise and efficiency that pushes the boundaries of what’s potential,” Spiegel stated.

The saga of Specs has been a protracted one. Snap initially started creating the product over a decade in the past. The final consumer-facing model of the glasses was launched in 2019. Since 2024, the glasses have been a developer-only product—giving Snap the chance to work on seeding new sorts of applications that the corporate hopes will draw customers to it upon launch.
